The owner of CrossFit Silverbeard reached out to me with a unique issue on one of his Concept2 rowing machines. He described the problem as follows: the rower works perfectly fine, but occasionally, a ‘sensor wire fault’ message appears on the screen.
Upon arrival, I was informed that the rowers had been used that day and were working fine with no issues. The owner couldn’t remember exactly which rower had the problem, as all the machines looked the same. I assured him that it wasn’t an issue and asked him to let me know when it happened again so I could come out to replace the part. I keep the necessary parts in stock, as this is a common fault on these rowers, especially the older ones. I left that day, but the owner contacted me the following day after the issue occurred again during one of the classes. He had marked which rower it was.
The repair process for these faults is straightforward. The issue is caused by a pickup sensor located behind the flywheel, which detects the wheel’s rotation to display data on the screen. Sometimes, these sensors become faulty and stop working. It takes about five minutes to replace the sensor, but you have to be careful not to damage the sensor wire.
After replacing the sensor, the rower now works without any issues. I followed up with the customer a week later, and there are still no problems with the rower.
