Why PAT Testing / Matters

Health and Safety at Work 1974

Elite Gym Maintenance offers professional PAT testing for any gyms nationally across the UK. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 discusses the general duty on employers to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of their employees. This means that any gym employers have a duty of care to any employees working with or around any electrical equipment.

Our PAT testing expert technicians will quickly diagnose any unsafe equipment within the building to ensure a healthy environment for all gym staff. There is no legal obligation to conduct mandatory PAT tests on any electrical equipment, however there is a legal obligation to implore a duty of care on any employee, which may be breached if they are working amongst faulty gym equipment.

Electricity at Work Regulations 1989

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 places the duty of care on employers and employees to prevent danger in all aspects of the use of electricity within the workplace, which are prominent in any gym environment. This act ensures that any gym electrical systems are designed, maintained, and operated safely. Without regular PAT testing, the potential for machine operation to fail becomes higher, and risk to anyone working on or around the machines may become dangerous.

We PAT test anything from big gym equipment to kitchen appliances and offices within gyms, where we provide certificates for all equipment necessary and conduct a full report on each appliance. This will highlight and reduce safety risks for employers, and being you peace of mind.

  • Fans getting clogged with dust and leading to machines being at risk of overheating.
  • Extension leads becoming overloaded, leading to overheating. Or extension leads being exposed to water damage, such as a dropped water bottle on the gym floor.

PAT Testing Requirments

What’s Involved in PAT Testing?

There are two parts to consistent PAT testing services: a visual check and an electrical test with the use of a PAT machine.

A visual check can be conducted by anyone with a good awareness of PAT requirements. This involves checking to find cracked plugs, exposed wires, loose sockets, burn marks, damaged cables, bent pins and more.

An electrical test can only be conducted by someone with adequate training, which is where trained PAT testers such as Elite Gym Maintenance come in. Electrical tests check for Insulation Resistance, where electricity may leak out; Polarity, to make sure that wires are connected correctly, and much more.

Once the PAT testing services are complete, the machine will receive a Pass or Fail label which will show the date of the PAT test, who conducted the PAT test, and results will get logged into a PAT record.

When is PAT Testing Required with Elite Gym Maintenance

When is PAT Testing Required?

There is no official rule or law stating when gym’s should PAT test their equipment. That said, all electrical appliances within the workplace should be tested frequently to provide safety to any gym employees. PAT testing ensures preventable risk solutions.

  • High-risk gear should be PAT tested around once per six months for high-risk gear. This represents gear that is used more often, such as any gym equipment on the gym floor that is available to both staff and guests. Treadmills, exercise bikes, stair climbers, elliptical and more fit into this category.
  • Middle-risk gear should be PAT tested from around six months to a year regularly. This represents gear that is used in extension to regular gym equipment, such as extension leads that connect any gym machinery to plug sockets.
  • Low-risk gear is at less risk of danger, but should still be PAT tested around once yearly if held within a working environment. This is because the electrical source in gym environments use up enough electricity to potentially cause unforeseen hazards. Kitchen equipment such as microwaves, water fountains and vending machines would be considered low-risk examples in need of PAT testing.

If possible, there should be monthly checks by employers to maintain an awareness of whether gym equipment needs PAT testing or not, in order to keep a safe working environment under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and The Electricity at Work Regulations Act 1989

Best Practices for PAT Testing Services Gyms

Elite Gym Maintenance presents below a list of the best practices when it comes to PAT Testing Services:

  • Don’t wait for Gym Equipment to Become Unfixable

Most employers only wait until equipment is unusable or a risk of safety to get it checked and, most of the time, it is too late for any fixes or solutions, therefore leading to costly replacements and potential building closures to fix it. Keeping to a regular PAT testing schedule of six months to one year will ensure a more reliable result to the overall health of your machinery.

  • Do Visual PAT Checks More Often

Any expert PAT tester will recommend an employer go around for monthly check ups. This will help decide if any gym equipment is in need of immediate safety solutions or repair.

  • Combine PAT Tests with General Machine Servicing

By enforcing the combination of both PAT tests with general machine servicing, you will find it easier to track both the PAT tests and regular servicing, whilst getting both completed at the same time. There’s no disadvantage to this method!

  • Label Gym Equipment Clearly

This is detrimental to the use of safe equipment. If employees don’t see the PAT test label, what’s going to stop them from using it if it has failed. And, if you don’t want gym customers to see the labels, make sure each employee has a clear understanding of where the labels are before letting them use the gym equipment.

  • Replace Failing Equipment

If a piece of gym equipment has failed its PAT test more than three times from big safety issues, and each time it has been temporarily fixed, it presents more of a risk to keep installing temporary fixes than it does to replace it with newer machinery. In the long run, it will be cheaper too.

Here at Elite Gym Maintenance, we hope to encourage better awareness around the necessity of PAT testing for future gym safety. Use your local expert PAT testers today!
